Animals, Ecology, and Religion in East Asia

JEFFREY NICOLAISEN

Thanks for visiting! I am an Assistant Professor of Religion and Culture at Hsuan Chuang University in Taiwan. After leaving my previous life as an environmental engineer and consultant, I returned to school to start a new academic career. Now I research animals, ecology, and religion in East Asia. I graduated with a Ph.D. in religion from Duke in December 2019 after completing my dissertation "Equality of Life: Thinking with Multi-Species Relationships in Taiwan," a multi-species ethnography centered on the Buddhist-inspired conservation organization Life Conservationist Association and indigenous hunting practices in Taiwan. My teaching specializations are East Asian religions, multi-species ethnogrpahy, Buddhism, animal studies, and political ecology.
